Strong growth in battery electric vehicles
The current registration figures from the Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (KBA) show that the market for battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in Germany continues to grow. In February 2026 alone, 42,692 new BEVs were registered, corresponding to a market share of 22.0 percent. This is a significant increase compared to the same period in 2025 and underlines the growing importance of electric vehicles.

Mazda: Market launch with great effect
The relative increase at Mazda is particularly striking. The brand increased its BEV registrations from 15 to 475 units, an increase of 3,066.7 percent. This enormous increase is primarily due to the late market entry of the Mazda6e model, which has only been available in Germany since summer 2025. In 2025, Mazda had hardly any presence in the electric segment, so the base figures were very low. The increase therefore primarily reflects the successful launch of a key model and not necessarily broad market acceptance of the entire brand.
BYD: Continuous business expansion
BYD is also among the big winners. Registrations increased from 364 to 3,162 vehicles, a plus of 768.7 percent. Unlike Mazda, this is not just a base effect. BYD significantly expanded its German business in 2025 and is focusing on a targeted market offensive in 2026. At the same time, the dealer and service network has been significantly expanded, which has improved vehicle availability and increased brand visibility.
Significance of absolute sales figures
While relative growth rates are interesting, volume shows the actual market presence. Brands such as VW, Skoda, Audi and BMW remain dominant in terms of absolute unit numbers. However, BYD demonstrates that the brand is not only growing proportionally but is also increasingly achieving larger sales volumes, making it a serious player in the German market.

Outlook for the BEV market
The current figures show that the market for electric vehicles continues to develop dynamically. New model launches, targeted market offensives and the expansion of dealer and service networks are crucial for growth, both relatively and absolutely. While established manufacturers remain leaders, new market participants are gaining increasing importance and are sustainably changing the competitive landscape in the German BEV segment.
