Local Manufacturing Launch
Chinese car manufacturer GAC has taken a significant step towards Europe. Through a collaboration with contract manufacturer Magna, the company's electric vehicles will be produced within the European Union for the first time.
Magna is no stranger to the industry, having already manufactured models such as the Mercedes-Benz G-Class and the Jaguar I-Pace. Following the end of production for several projects, the cooperation with GAC now opens up new perspectives for the contract manufacturer.

Strategy Against Trade Barriers
The decision for local production follows a clear economic logic. Vehicles built directly in Europe are not affected by the additional import tariffs imposed on electric cars manufactured in China.
A similar approach was previously chosen by Xpeng, which also relies on Magna as a partner. For manufacturers from China, this model offers the opportunity to protect their margins and respond more quickly to market demands.
First Model: Aion V for Europe
The first vehicle to be produced in Europe as part of this cooperation is the Aion V. This is a compact, five-door electric crossover.
Particularly noteworthy is its safety: The model received the highest rating of five stars in the Euro NCAP crash test, while some established competitors only achieved four stars.
Technical Data at a Glance
The Aion V is offered with front-wheel drive, delivering 201 hp. A lithium iron phosphate battery with a capacity of 75.2 kWh serves as the energy storage.
The WLTP range is approximately 316 miles (about 509 kilometers). Charging performance is also solid: 180 kW DC and 11 kW AC are available.
Overall, the model technically positions itself in the mid-range, without offering extreme performance values or extraordinary specifications.
Equipment as a Decisive Factor
A significant advantage of the Aion V lies in its extensive standard equipment. Despite a comparatively moderate price, the vehicle offers numerous comfort features that are not common in this class.
These include a panoramic glass roof, a heated steering wheel, electrically adjustable seats, and heated and ventilated front seats. Heated rear seats are also available. This is complemented by a dual-zone automatic climate control with a heat pump, automatic high beam, and modern infotainment functions such as Apple CarPlay.
Price Positioning in Competition
In Germany, the starting price is around 35,990 Euros including VAT. This places the Aion V in the range of established models, but it sometimes offers more features for the same or a lower price.
For comparison: A Tesla Model Y in the basic version costs about 39,990 Euros and is also manufactured in Europe. While Tesla benefits from local production, the equipment in the entry-level version remains comparatively reduced.
Growing Presence of Chinese Manufacturers
GAC is part of a larger trend. More and more Chinese automotive companies are trying to establish themselves long-term in the European market. Besides Xpeng, other brands are also pursuing similar strategies.
Leapmotor, for example, plans further production projects in Europe together with Stellantis, while BYD is working on its own production facility in Hungary. These developments show that competition in the European electric car market continues to increase.
Importance for the Market
The cooperation between GAC and Magna illustrates how important local production has become for market success. In addition to avoiding tariffs, proximity to the customer also plays a crucial role.
For European manufacturers, this means additional competitive pressure, especially in the price-sensitive segment. At the same time, consumers benefit from a wider choice and more attractive offers.

Conclusion: New Dynamics Through Cooperations
With the start of production of the Aion V in Europe, GAC sends a clear signal of its international ambitions. The combination of local manufacturing, competitive pricing, and extensive features could help the company establish itself in the European market.
At the same time, the example shows that cooperations with experienced manufacturing partners are an effective way to open up new markets and overcome existing hurdles.
