Market Slowdown Changes Electrification Strategy
Global demand for electric vehicles continues to grow, but at a slower pace than originally projected. In key markets such as Europe, China, and the USA, manufacturers are increasingly adapting their strategies. Instead of focusing exclusively on all-electric models, Plug-in Hybrids (PHEV) are gaining renewed importance as they represent a bridge between conventional powertrains and purely electric vehicles.
Against this backdrop, a clear strategic shift is evident at BYD, one of the fastest-growing automotive manufacturers worldwide.

Atto 2 DM-i as the Answer to European Requirements
With the new Atto 2 DM-i, BYD is bringing a hybrid variant of its previously purely electric compact SUV to Europe for the first time. In parallel, a version of the all-electric model with a larger battery was also presented. Nevertheless, the PHEV version is particularly in focus, as it is specifically tailored to current market conditions.
The vehicle uses the well-known DM-i technology, which is already used in other models of the manufacturer. The aim is to combine efficiency, range, and everyday usability without completely foregoing an internal combustion engine.
Technical Concept and Drive System
At the heart of the powertrain is a 1.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine, which works together with two electric motors. This interplay ensures that the vehicle primarily runs on electricity, while the internal combustion engine mainly serves to generate energy.
Additionally, power can be transmitted directly to the wheels when needed. This concept is reminiscent of systems from other manufacturers where electrical efficiency is combined with mechanical support.
In terms of performance, the model offers two variants: The base version achieves 164 hp, while the more powerful version comes with 209 hp.
Electric Range and Consumption Figures
The Atto 2 DM-i will be offered with two different battery sizes. The smaller variant has 7.8 kWh, while the larger battery offers 18 kWh capacity.
With the larger battery, up to 90 kilometers of purely electric range (WLTP) are possible, according to the manufacturer. The combined total range is stated as approximately 1,000 kilometers. In addition, BYD quotes a very low average consumption, which, however, depends heavily on the respective driving conditions.
Such efficiency values should be viewed with caution, as they are often determined under idealized test conditions and can vary in everyday use.
Pricing Strategy and Market Positioning
A key factor for the potential success of the model is its price. Initial estimates from Great Britain suggest that the entry price could be around £25,000 (approx. $33,000).
This would position the Atto 2 DM-i as one of the more affordable plug-in hybrid SUVs in Europe. Especially in a market where many manufacturers have reduced their affordable compact models, this could be a decisive competitive advantage.
Trade Conditions Favor PHEV Strategy
Another reason for the introduction of hybrid models lies in the current trade conditions. Import duties on pure electric vehicles from China are comparatively high in Europe, which limits their competitiveness.
Plug-in hybrids, on the other hand, are subject to lower duties, making them more economically attractive. For manufacturers like BYD, this opens up the opportunity to expand their market presence while improving profitability.
Challenges for European Manufacturers
The strategy of Chinese brands could further intensify competition in Europe. Companies like BYD or MG score not only with electric models but also with attractively priced alternatives for buyers on a budget.
At the same time, some established manufacturers have reduced their offerings in the small car and compact segments. This gap is now increasingly being filled by new market participants who specifically focus on affordable mobility.
Global Adaptation of the Model Range
BYD also demonstrates a clear ability to adapt its products to different markets. While a particularly small electric vehicle is planned for Japan, the European offering focuses more on compact SUVs and hybrid models.
This flexible strategy could be decisive in the long term for success in various regions. Should the company enter the US market in the future, it can be assumed that it will again specifically address local needs.

Conclusion: Tactical Realignment with a Clear Perspective
With the Atto 2 DM-i, BYD is pursuing a pragmatic approach that takes current market conditions into account. Instead of exclusively focusing on electromobility, the company combines various drive technologies to appeal to a broader audience.
The introduction of this model in Europe underlines that flexibility and pricing are increasingly crucial for success in the global automotive market.
