Introducing the new i3
BMW is preparing the next phase of its electrification strategy, introducing the new i3, a fully electric sedan that transfers the venerable 3 Series into electric mobility. The model is the second vehicle of the so-called "New Class" and is intended to embody technological innovation as well as increased efficiency and driving dynamics.

Production start and location strategy
Production of the new i3 will begin in the second half of 2026 at the Munich plant, which is currently undergoing extensive modernization to meet the requirements of electric production. The first deliveries to customers are scheduled for autumn 2026. In the long term, the site will be fully converted to the production of all-electric vehicles of the New Class, underlining BMW's commitment to electromobility.
Technical innovations
At its core, the new i3 uses the advanced BMW eDrive technology based on an 800-volt architecture. This enables significantly faster charging times and increases energy efficiency. The range is stated at up to around 900 kilometers, while charging capacities of up to 400 kW emphasize the demands in the premium segment.
The interior has also undergone extensive modernization. New digital displays, intuitive operating concepts and a completely revised software architecture ensure a fresh user experience. This means that the mid-range sedan should not only impress technologically, but also offer a new level of connectivity and comfort.
Competition in the premium segment
With the i3, BMW enters into direct competition with established models such as the Tesla Model 3 and the planned electric Mercedes CLA. As the second model series of the New Class after the iX3, the sedan plays a central role in the electrification strategy. The goal is to accelerate the transformation towards a fully electric vehicle fleet and to position the brand for the future in this segment.
Design and User Experience
Although the design is reminiscent of the familiar proportions of the 3 Series, the new i3 brings numerous subtle changes that improve aerodynamics, efficiency and interior comfort. Drivers and passengers benefit from modernized controls, extended assistance systems and a highly digitized interface that enables intuitive interactions.
The combination of range, charging speed and innovative technologies should ensure that the i3 remains competitive both in everyday use and on long distances. The integration of the eDrive architecture and digital functions highlights BMW's claim to redefine expectations for a fully electric premium sedan.

Outlook
Price information for the new i3 has not yet been officially confirmed, but industry observers estimate a value of around 50,000 euros or more. The market launch of the sedan is intended to significantly support the electrification strategy of the New Class and pave the way for further fully electric models in the 3 Series.
With the new i3, BMW shows how traditional model series can be successfully transferred to electric mobility, while at the same time bringing design, driving dynamics and technology up to date.
