A 6 m Type 2 cable is suitable when the charging point is close to the vehicle. An 8 m cable gives more flexibility for public and home charging, while a 10 m cable suits longer distances or less convenient parking positions. Before choosing, check the location of the vehicle’s charging port and measure the actual cable route.
6 m, 8 m or 10 m?
The correct length depends mainly on the distance between the charging point and the vehicle’s charging port. Parking direction also matters because charging ports may be located at the front, rear or side of the car.
| Cable length | Best suited to | Main consideration |
|---|---|---|
| 6 m | Short and predictable distances | Easier to carry and store |
| 8 m | Home and public AC charging | A practical balance of reach and handling |
| 10 m | Larger spaces or changing parking positions | More reach, but more weight and storage space |
A 6 m cable is often enough when the car uses the same parking position each day. An 8 m cable provides extra reach when the charging station is not beside the charging port. A 10 m cable is more suitable when the cable needs to reach around the vehicle or across a larger parking space.
Is a Longer Cable Always Better?
A longer cable provides more flexibility, but it is also heavier and takes up more room in the boot. Extra cable must also be placed carefully during charging.
The best choice is not necessarily the longest option. It is the shortest cable that reaches the vehicle comfortably in the situations where it will normally be used.
How to Measure the Required Length
Park the vehicle in its usual charging position. Measure from the Type 2 socket to the vehicle’s charging port, following the route the cable will take along the ground.
Allow some extra length so the cable can form a relaxed curve without pulling on either connector. If the cable will also be used at public AC stations, consider adding more reach for different station layouts and parking directions.
Does Cable Length Affect Charging Speed?
Cable length does not determine the charging speed. The actual power depends on the vehicle, charging point and cable rating.
EVDANCE 11 kW and 22 kW Type 2 charging cables are available in 6 m, 8 m and 10 m versions. Choose the required power rating separately from the cable length.
